Throughout the twentieth century in the United States, public debates and experts’ discourses controversially discussed women’s biological and social functions as mothers of future citizens. These debates about ‘concepts of motherhood’ offer insight into processes of social change and reactions to them. A thorough analysis of controversies about women’s rights, working women and reproduction shows that the range of moral norms and women’s options steadily increased. Nevertheless, the notion that women should have the right to combine motherhood and careers was constantly threatened by social conservatives who defined gender roles in terms of biological paradigms.
